The Amalfi Coast
On the train from Florence, the views out the window through the Montepulciano region were amazing.
The view from our hotel room balcony
We enjoyed the view with some lemoncello produced within walking distance of our hotel.
The booming metropolis of Praiano, where we stayed during our time on the Amalfi coast.
On our way to dinner in Praiano. Anyone that’s been to the Amalfi coast knows the craziness that is the road. People drive like maniacs along it, with certain death around every corner.
There is a model of the town of Praiano on the side of the road. It turned out that the artist that created it has a studio adjacent to the hotel we stayed at.
Our pre-dinner sunset view
Another view from our pre-dinner spot. Positano is viewable in the background.
Sunset along our walk to our first dinner in Praiano. The three cliffs rising above the horizon on the left side are part of Capri, which we went to the next day.
Leaving Positano the next morning to visit Capri for the day. This is the day we discovered the amazing reliability of Amalfi coast public transportation (or complete lack thereof).
Further out from Positano on the ferry.
Mount Vesuvius in view during our ferry ride to Capri.
The cliffs poking out behind Lisa are the Sirenusas… the origin of the mythological sirens.
Pulling into the harbor at Capri
We decided to “walk” to the piazza at the top. By walk, I mean climb countless steps and hike uphill for 30 minutes. Stairs/uphill climbs were a common theme at this point. We earned our pasta and wine!
Along the path to the top. Apparently you can rent a taxi or take a lift to the top.
Fruit and vegetables were growing everywhere. The lemons are the most famous, but we spotted limes as well.
The harbor at Capri.
On the way out to the blue grotto spot.
More views from the boat to the blue grotto.
It was a long, vertical walk, but the views were worth it.
Capri from above.
After countless attempts to find stamps to mail to the U.S., Lisa was finally able to mail her postcards from the top of Capri.
Apparently Lisa has a long-lost fashion designer relative with a shop in Capri.
Headed back down the path to the harbor
Approaching Positano on the ferry.
We were in a rush on our way through Positano during the morning trying to catch our ferry. It was nice to get back and have time to slowly make our way back through the town.
We stopped in Positano to enjoy a snack. Of course I got a cannolo.
Leaving Positano. We got lucky and forced our way onto a bus to get back to Praiano.
Positano
Positano from the road leaving town.
We checked out a different part of Praiano for dinner. Everything is laid out in vertical tiers here.
One of many friends we made along the way
I decided to try grappa after dinner…
One sip of the grappa was enough. I think I’m good on that.
